I think this sort of slump has been on the cards for a while. Englands much vaunted top six have not fired for a while. Cook has been the only one who has scored centuries consistently over the past year or so. He has been due a slump. Vaughan is not the player he once was: given the injuries he has had, he is lucky to still be playing. Strauss’s days in the Test team are surely numbered: his comeback has not worked out, and he does not look as though he has sorted out his technical difficulties. Bell: Why??? He is not an international batsman. Pietersen seems to have lost his zest. Collingwood does enough to appear better than the rest: preserves his wicket, fields well, and has started taking wickets. Making a play for the Test captaincy?
We all heard that this Napier pitch was full of runs. It may well be, but England are certainly struggling. It could be one of those pitches that is better on day two. It will be interesting to see how England bowl on it. New Zealands attack is probably best described as workmanlike. Englands in theory has a touch of class about it.
58 for 4 at lunch. Let’s see what the afternoon session brings.
